“Return”: composed by me! completed version. (stopped myself before I go out of control with OCD editting)

I originally wanted to name this song something along the lines of “distant homeland”, I envision some utopia or a homeland that one has long left and can never return to. But I thought it was too long and specific (but ironically not descriptive enough…), and I remembered the segment in the music documentary about a Rachmaninoff prelude with the program of “exile”, where they described it as a return. So I settled for “return” instead, a desire to go back to a familiar place, the peace before change, to be surrounded by pleasantness again.

The picture is to illustrate the program of the piece. I didn’t say anything about it while drawing the picture because it would sound ridiculously narcissistic… who do I think I am listening to my own song while illustrating it LOL. But the scenery takes place sometime in the future where the world is in chaos. Throughout the story it becomes more and more clear to Veloce she wants to return “home”–that place as I described, not the home she left. But as she treads towards this goal she passes by nothing but scorched remains of land that were once peaceful homes of many. The world was war-torn by the struggles of the immortals who wants to be freed from their imprisonment in the mortal realms and return to heaven, where they are from. It reminded her of the catastrophe centuries past where a god, driven by the same wish, almost destroyed the world. The vision of this unreachable homeland is glorious, but again and again the trail left by its pursuers is always one of destruction. It causes her to doubt whether she will end up the same.

    That music is awesome, as well as the image. How I wish I could draw, or compose like you do! Could I ask what program you used to put the music together? I'd really love to start composing some rough pieces for fun, and it would be a great help to know how you got started, thanks!

    • { Shilin }

      thank you ^^ the program I used is called reason.

  2. { Darkhikari }

    Ah, so that's what you were listening to. Drawing an original pic while listening to your own music — how awesome! xD I'm so inspired by your ability to do both!

    ….Need to level up guitar! adfskdjfh

  3. The song sounds incredible. Lots of emotion.

  4. Oh I remember seeing you draw this on the livestream. Looks incredible to where I left it off.

  5. { Evgenia }

    Shilin, you yourself wrote that music?
    Very beautiful I like it. Not podskazhesh where you can download it?

    • { Shilin }

      you can download it here (: http://j.mp/e0yBlu

    I think it's wonderful to be able to illustrate your own piece of music :D. You have a lot of talent Shilin ^^

    Dang, girl–you really have a gift for this! Beautiful, brooding piece (especially that "sparkling" interlude starting 1:30 with those dark, rumbling background sounds; it's so Veloce somehow!). I really liked the slightly darker/more dramatic "turn" in the piano melody around 1:10 too. I have no idea what that kind of chord is called that makes that feeling of "something has just intensified/grown more dire/dramatic," but it really added something solid to anchor the melody to. I love it! And I think it's the coolest thing that you can not only express this scene/feeling in music but in artwork too. Now I'd love to see you make a "trailer" for Black Bird or something, using your atmospheric artwork and the theme music~~

    • { Shilin }

      haha animation is way out of my league LOL. I might be able to pull off a yuumei-style sequence of illustrations but that takes sooooo much work XD

  8. The melody is so sad!!! >.<
    But I love it!!!!
    I wonder if I'm an idiot for loving sad songs\melodies… I always collect the sad songs from anime OSTs and keep listening to them the whole time XD

  9. { brushmen }

    Oh man so this is what happened to the photoshopping. XD
    And boy that sword now makes sense to be of that size… Still it better be light or held up by magic. ;)

    • { Shilin }

      the sword is for show really, it's more a medium than a weapon. veloce would fight just as well with or without it but she fancies running around with something like that XD

  10. It's never easy knowing that you want to return "home", wherever that is, and knowing full well that you're unable to actually return :(…As for the picture, the dragons razing the land, the lighting, clouds and one pillar of light, illuminating the town, can't get much more pathetic fallacy then that! Here's hoping that light symbolizes a light at the end of all of this destruction.

    • { Shilin }

      In reality if this were really a scene in the story, the pillar of light would just be the immortals finally opening up a gate to return to heaven after ruining everything in the world. So it would mean the bad guys won which is not really a good thing!
