I had a really hard time choosing an additional background element to toss into the picture, flowers water or chains, but then I realized the reason why everything I draw is so cluttered is because I don’t know when to stop adding shit and it looks mighty busy as is lmfao. I was doing line art for this originally but like 3 hours afterwards, I realized the lineart looked like shit and I really didnt want to continue. So I scribbled the rest on loosely, filled it with red and just used it as guidelines for painting lmao. This takes SO MUCH LESS TIME than painstakingly outlining all the ornaments on her boots and hair and shit, but I think–and friends agree–that my lined style is the prettier of the two lol ): A HEFTY PRICE MUST BE PAID TO MAKE THINGS ALL PRETTY AND ANIMU… I’ll probably try to give the colours a wash when I’m done to try to lighten up the grudgy feeling that it has now.

I recorded most of the process here, although there is a gap between the second video and the WIP I posted above comprised of a lot of bodypart cutting/free transforming lolol. I was going to record the entire process from start to finish but I realized anything beyond this point would just be me blending like a nut, and it’s going to probably take like 5 more videos or something so MAYBE IT’S NOT A GOOD IDEA TO DO THAT LMAO.

I’m on a manga high this week, I had a huge urge to draw at the beginning of the week but couldn’t figure out what, in the end I realized I just wanted to storyboard/draft sequences… so I ended up drawing the next update early and then toned like 7 other pages lmfao. When did this sudden transition from illustrator to sequential artist take place? But ya all I got done this week are pages that I can’t show ):

As colour experiment #2, I took a panel and colourized it with a little more effort this time. I have to say while this looks really rough because I only gave it like 15 minutes (colours only, not the actual grey scale shading), the effect is incredibly natural to produce; I don’t have to arbitrarily pinpoint a colour that I think will work with the image, I just have to choose a few lights and let it interact with the existing colour. The layers I stacked on top of the b/w image in order are:

• new layer (multiply mode), fill canvas with light brown (or whatever base colour that fits)
• new layer (color mode) on, low opacity air brush and set down the colours of the design. I chose airbrush for subtle gradients in colours. I didn’t clean up edges with a solid brush because this is not a serious image.
• new layers (try each mode out and see whichever looks nice, play around and stack them on top of each other), then airbrush lightly again random colours of the spectrum. you’ll notice some colours look like crap while others work nicely. you can remember which ones pair up well but always throw in something that stands out or is exotic to keep the image dynamic. for example I used some green on this picture here, and it works well even though you can’t really notice the green.
• notes: mix up use of darkness and saturation when choosing these “interaction” colours, desaturated colours work just as well in these layermodes as flaring ones

After playing with this I almost want to colourize the whole 10 page extra story, but it’d add to the cost of the book and it doesn’t really do all that much in my opinion ): and this hazy effect definitely doesn’t work with the rest of Blackbird LOL

AND ONTO THE SADDEST NEWS OF THE WEEK (aside from Japan) I DIDN’T GET PICKED FOR ANIME NORTH’S LOTTERY TABLES THIS YEAR so I won’t have a table there this year. There is technically 2 more days to the design contest but I really don’t want to do it just for the table. I would lose a big chance to sell my books, but I do feel relieved that I won’t have to think about whether an illustration will sell well as a print or not for my upcoming CGs, because I’m soooo long overdue to paint I was getting pissed off just thinking about those things. Plus this is a good excuse for me to actually walk around the convention/artist alley for real because god knows if I get a table I’ll just be glued to it for 3 days like every other year lol ): still I’m soooooo sad because almost everyone I know who ended up in the lottery got in AND I FEEL SO LEFT OUT. It’s not even that I desperately want to sell stuff, it’s completely the kind of attitude where you must have that awesome toy that all your friends have LOLOL

I had a procedure in the hospital last wednesday. The procedure itself was simple but I still underestimated its effect because I didn’t expect to be ko’ed for like 5 days… It was quite an experience though, the general anesthesia was awesome because I just blinked and went from passing out to waking up in the recovery room 3 hours later. Or the worst I guess since I could barely breathe because my body was still so stoned out from the anesthesia. I was talking to sepia beforehand about how I’d be like those people on youtube acting all retarded when I wake up, and I was like “oh cool, I feel pretty sane and in control I don’t think I’ll make myself look like a doofus”. But then the nurse wheeled in a few more patients and as I watched them slowly wake up while barfing out gibberish like donkeys, I realized I was probably just like them I just don’t remember it ):

So after not being able to do ANYTHING productive for a few days, which by the way was the worst feeling ever especially since I slept for like 18 hours a day and I could feel my brain melting into soup, I did a lot of drawing AND NOW I’M ALMOST ALL GOOD AGAIN YAY! I missed my 14/7/365 schedule ;w;

In the beginning I was just going for a simple vector white against skin tone pic but somehow it turned into this. Why did I draw all those chain links? seriously I am incapable of getting ideas across quick and to the point.

pouty! there’s a smirky to go with this design. I’ve been wanting to make charms at printsess but I don’t draw cute things well, and I never have any ideas for chibis and stuff. But I think I will be shitting out 4 charm designs (these two plus another set) over the next few weeks to make charms to throw into the volume 1 book deal. I don’t want to make a lot cus they’re expensive, annoying to make, and I don’t even know if people would want them lmao. BUT I WANT THEM. So I’m considering ordering a few and either doing a first come first serve thing with preorders, or raffling them out at the risk of the charms going to people that don’t really want them.

the taiwanese DRRR doujin erina ordered for us arrived! I don’t even follow the series but we love the artist so hard AND IT WAS WORTH IT. erina said this doujin is apparently sought after online because the author only takes taiwanese currency… lol SUCH A WASTE IN MY HANDS :D

And it’s donnneee I like it better than the other cover I don’t like it by itself lmfao. I think I’m going to turn up the contrast and throw in some crazy lights when laying out the cover. I’m still trying to find a way I like to paint faces, because I can use harsh and angular lines when I sketch, but when I paint everyone’s faces turn all soft and smooth and lose their personality just because of my brush strokes.
